Vision Statement:

At Washingwell, we will inspire our children to pursue their natural curiosity by promoting the exploration of scientific phenomena, using a range of investigative strategies. As they move through their education, we will ensure that their knowledge and understanding of the world around them continues to deepen and evolve. Our children will be encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, assess risk, experiment, reflect on their findings, make mistakes and learn from them; all the while, acquiring and applying core skills which will equip them for an ever-changing world.

 

Our school bases the core work in history around the National Curriculum which aims to ensure that all pupils:
  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of scientific enquiries that help them answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

 

What does science offer children? How does it enhance the curriculum?
  • It allows children the opportunity to explore and investigate.

  • The ability to follow a method to reach an end goal.
  • The chance to hypothesise and explain.

What use is it to children in later life? 
  • As adults, they will have an understanding of the biological, chemical and physical processes occurring around them every day.
  • Supports them to challenge or question, and not be beaten when an answer is difficult to reach.
  • Encourages a sense of awe and wonder, stimulating children to continue their learning into adulthood.
  • Skills learnt are essential for future career prospects; science gives the opportunity to change lives now and in the future.
  • Scientific knowledge, skills and understanding can lead into career paths such as medicine, research, teaching and engineering.
